Pokemon Heroes TTRPG
A downloadable game
Pokemon: Heroes is a TTRPG intended to simulate playing the games and experiencing the anime, all at a table with your friends, playing Trainers, and your most vital friend, your Narrator!
On a scale of light to heavy, I would call this a crunchier Pokeymanz (a very important design touchstone for this game). I sought to simplify dice rolling as much as possible, while still having Move selection and team combat matter.
Main Features:
- A success-counting d6 dice pool system, with additional d8s and d4s to shake things up
- Separate Attributes that define your Trainer
- 11 Trainer Classes to show Trainer diversity, with advancement done by a combination of EXP spending and milestone leveling through Ranks
- A simplified version of Pokemon battling as seen in the games, restricted to avoid computer calculations but still includes things such as Move selection, stat changes, and Pokemon strength
- A detailed and fleshed-out Contest system alongside battling
- GM tools, including preparing battles and Wild Pokemon, unique battle mechanics such as Shadow Pokemon and Mega Evolution, and preparing regions by dividing it into node-based travel
All advice, criticisms, and comments are welcomed! In any case, I hope at least one table composed of folks I don't know gives it a try, even if it may land amongst the masses of other Pokemon tabletops out there.
What's included? Italics denote required materials
- Pokemon Heroes Handbook - the main text containing the rules and mechanics needed to play the game
- Trainer License - the character sheet, used for both your Trainer and slots for up to six Pokemon
- Pokemon Only - a separate Pokemon character sheet with six slots
- Player's Guide - a shortened and simplified version of the main Handbook intended for use by players to facilitate quick character creation and rules reference. We highly recommend players still read the core Handbook at least once!
- Move Dex - an optional Move and Ability Dex usable for the game
- Contest Statblock - a separate statblock for one Pokemon for use in Pokemon Contests
- Party Tracker - a Narrator tool to track up to 4 Trainers, including how much EXP you've given and what Pokemon they have in their party
- Quest Log - a Narrator tool to track Quests and reward EXP to their Trainers
- Tutorial Materials - a zipped folder containing a quick introductory one-shot (The Runaway Pokeball!) and associated materials
- Give me it all! - all the materials listed above, in one nice little ZIP
Acknowledgements of property: Pokemon, its intellectual property, and all licensing and property of Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. This product will never be for sale and cost money in any way to play.
Quick thanks and touchstones: Pokeymanz, Genesys, and of course, you if you give this a try!
Future goals:
- A full 3-6 session adventure to introduce more complicated system mechanics, including Contests, Dungeons, Node Maps, and Downtime
- Expansion of Narrator tools, including random generation and Pokemon preparation
- Tweaks to balancing and math, per comments and critiques
- New Classes - Standard Classes like the Bonded (use of a single powerful Pokemon) and Unique Classes like the Duos (two people who select the Class together and benefit from tag-team interactions in battle)
- A statblock generator - way down the line, but by providing a Pokemon and a general level, to respond with a fully-statted Pokemon in return to quickly generate random encounters or help with preparation
